Grounds and Maintenance Person


Job description

To provide an effective grounds service to the parish grounds and cemetery areas to ensure the grounds are maintained in a tidy, presentable and safe state at all times. To undertake maintenance work of the Church grounds and premises as designated by the Parish Priest.

Responsibilities

  • To undertake a set programme of grounds maintenance activities to ensure that Church premises are maintained in a neat and tidy condition: including cutting and maintaining all lawns, ensuring that gullies, drains are cleaned and steps are washed.
  • Flower beds should be edged and kept weed-free especially in flowering season.
  • To keep up to date with horticultural developments and legislation by attending the relevant courses.
  • To undertake basic general maintenance of the Church premises, fixtures and fittings.
  • To ensure, in winter especially, that access roads, pavements, steps are always safe for use.
  • To undertake chemical weed control in accordance with the ‘Safe Working Procedures for the Use of Chemicals’. Calibrate, mix and apply herbicides and pesticides to control weeds and insects.
  • To ensure adequate stocks of tools, equipment and materials necessary for the upkeep of the Church premises and to report any requirements for additional stocks or equipment repairs
  • Operation and programming of the boilers, lighting, security alarms, fire alarms and extinguishers in the Parish Hall and Conference Rooms.
  • Basic maintenance work in the Parish Hall and Conference Rooms (e.g. changing light bulbs, painting etc)

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience of grounds maintenance, either in an employed or voluntary capacity.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Procedures.
  • An ability to work on your own initiative.
  • An ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Full valid driving licence and access to a car/vehicle for transporting equipment between sites.
