Job description
As a qualified Commis Chef you will assist the Chef de Partie with tasks related to preparation of sandwiches/ deli items/ desserts, safety and sanitation. Success in this role will be determined by your ability to support the kitchen’s efficiency and safety without compromising the quality of the meals produced.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring you have high standards of food hygiene and follow the rules of health and safety.
- Prepare, cook & present hot & cold dishes and sauces according to hotel standards.
- Plate meal items under the chef de partie’s supervision.
- Continually develop culinary knowledge to produce high-quality meals.
- Monitoring portion and waste control to maintain profit margins.
- Measure, mix, and prepare meal ingredients, sauces, and seasonings.
- Wash, chop, and cut fruit, meat, and vegetables.
- Monitor kitchen equipment and reports issues to superiors.
- Assess inventory and request resupplies when necessary.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- English language and Maths, or equivalent.
- Good oral communication.
- Industry recognised Hospitality and Catering diploma or other qualification e.g. L2 NVQ Professional Cookery Accreditation, City and Guilds diplomas in professional cookery, BTEC HND in professional cookery, foundation degree in culinary arts.
- Experience assisting in the food preparation process.
- Ability to produce good quality basic food.
- Experience of kitchen equipment.
- Experience of dangerous equipment such as knives.
- Experience assisting other chefs.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy items.
- Experience in cleaning stations.
- Fluent in English in order to follow Health & Safety procedures.
Desirable Skills
- 1 to 2 years' of work experience in a similar role.
- Hotel kitchen experience is advantageous.
- Good understanding of food, health, and safety regulations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Computer literacy skills.
- Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace Award.
- Level 3 Food Safety Awards.
- Ability to work unsupervised and deliver quality work.
- Cooking and preparing elements of high quality dishes.
- Adaptability to change and willingness to embrace new ideas and processes.
- Experience helping with deliveries and restocking.
- Experience assisting with stock rotation.
