Job description
To contribute to the operation of a library service by assisting students, staff and others in the use of a range of library services in a polite, professional and helpful manner. Please see employer website for full job details & person specification.
Responsibilities
- Issue, renew and return of books and other materials using the library management system and self-service facilities. Sort and shelve books and other material and work to keep the library tidy.
- Process card payments for overdue books in line with procedures and store receipts of all payment transactions undertaken in the day-to-day operation of library services Respond to queries about users’ library accounts and undertake routine admin.
- Administration of the group study rooms in line with procedures. Support photocopying, scanning and printing facilities for users. Maintain the order and organisation of Library resources, filing, labelling, minor repair, re-shelving items returned,
- Undertake library administration as directed to include preparing resources for user access, assisting with the processing of new materials for addition to stock, processing library cards, stock inventory, recording the door count, collating usage.
- Carry out routine procedures associated with the administration of the library service, opening and closing the library. Ensure equipment in the Library is in working order and report faults as necessary.
- Be supportive and a good team player, by actively participating in team proceedings, effectively communicating with colleagues and users. Ensure that information is processed and stored securely in all areas in line with the College Data Protection.
- Abide by all College procedures and ensure these are implemented in area of responsibility. Understand and comply with staff responsibilities under College Health and Safety Policy. Understand and comply with the College Equal Opportunities Policy.

Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- A minimum of five GCSE passes at grade C or above, to include Maths and English Language, or equivalent academic qualifications. A minimum of 2 A Level passes, or an equivalent qualification. Experience using standard Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge and experience of using library services. Ability to work both independently, or within a team, and complete agreed tasks to time allocated. Reliable with a helpful and courteous approach to customers.
- All our library positions include manual work tasks for example, shelving books, shelf tidying, weeding, stock inventory.
Desirable Skills
- The Selection Panel may apply one or more of the Desirable Criteria at selection.
- Experience of working in a library to include use of a computerised library management information system. Experience of working independently with little supervision in a similar position.
- Experience of dealing with customers, answering enquiries efficiently and effectively. Working knowledge of how to self-initiate and prioritise tasks. Ability to undertake tasks with accuracy.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, including a high standard of written and spoken English
Further Information
Rate of Pay Gross hourly rate will range from £12.67 - £13.87 gross per hour based on a grade 3 full time equivalent salary of £23,061 to £25,249 gross per annum. Contractual Status: Temporary. Required immediately during a period of staff absence. One week’s notice of employment end date will be provided. Holidays 25 days per annum pro rata. Holidays will be pro-rated, equivalent to hours and weeks of work. As this position is required to provide staff cover during absence, holidays can only be taken by agreement with the Librarian when additional staff cover can be arranged.
