Job description

As an IT apprentice, you’ll be part of a large and diverse IT profession that supports essential public services across Northern Ireland. Our teams design, build, run and support the digital systems used every day by staff, citizens and wider public sector. You could work in one of two broad areas: Departmental IT Services or Digital Shared Services. Both offer hands-on experience, modern technologies, and structured support to help you build a strong IT career.

Responsibilities

  • The following will give you an idea of the range of duties that an IT Apprentice may be required to perform. As the remit of the NICS is very diverse the list is not meant to be exhaustive but aims to give a good indication of the main duties;
  • Development IT Apprentices will gain fundamental programming skills and develop capability to apply these to specific languages and platforms.
  • They will develop a knowledge and understanding of the software development life cycle and contribute to the design, development, and delivery of robust, cost effective and secure business solutions.

  • Database Administration
  • Systems Design

  • Information Content Authoring

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Have applied for IT Networking Infrastructure or IT - Software Development Apprenticeship Programme advertised by the Belfast Met College, in partnership with the Department for the Economy. Please refer to the Candidate Information Booklet.
  • Possess five GCSEs, at Grade C or above, which includes English Language and Mathematics, AND a pass at A or AS level in any subject area (or an equivalent qualification in any discipline).

Desirable Skills

  • The shortlisting criteria will be based on the Test Scores. Depending on the number of applications, only those candidates who attain the highest score in the ICT aptitude test will be invited to interview.
