Job description
The Department for Infrastructure is responsible for the maintenance, development and planning of critical infrastructure in Northern Ireland. Through its focus on water, transport and planning, the Department is seeking to manage and protect over £30 bn of public assets that improve people’s quality of life, reduce our impact on the planet by living sustainability and decarbonising key services, and building prosperity by driving inclusive productivity. The Department has a vast and wide-ranging remit. Its responsibilities are grouped into three key delivery areas: Water, Transport and Planning.
Responsibilities
- Ferry support; Assist Ferry Manager/Harbour Master and senior management team.
- Ticketing system - Liaise with provider, maintain and update system, investigate faults and ensure register is populated.
- SMS system - Liaise with provider, investigate faults and ensure register is populated.
- CCTV - Backup CCTV footage as and when required.
- Vehicle/Passenger Count Audits.
- Quality Management System (QMS) - Carry out a QMS review and make changes to procedures.
- Passenger Counting System.
- Website updates, compilation and verification of date for publication.
- NI Direct Scripts and IP Telephony updates.
- Advertisements/flyers - Source when required.
- Disaster recovery tests / Health checks organise annual health checks of IT systems, liaise and assist with testing.
- Assist Port Facility Secuirity Officer (PFSO) and Deputy Port Facility Secuirity Officer (DPFSO) with port facility security duties when required.
- FOI/EIR Data requests.
- Production and amendment of contract documents.
- Assist Ferry Manager with premises officer duties/terminal maintenance.
- Assist the maintenance supervisor.
- Supervision of staff, contractors and/or direct labour force.
- Site surveys and collection and interpretation of data.
- Use of engineering and general IT facilities and software.
- Application of appropriate Health and Safety measures.
- Management of resources both human and financial.
- Liaising with staff from different disciplines and work areas.
- Dealing with issues raised by members of the public, and line management, communicating appropriately both verbally and in writing.
- Travel throughout Northern Ireland will be required to areas with limited public transport and on occasion outside normal office hours,
- therefore, access to a form of transport and a full valid driving licence will be required to fulfil the duties of this post.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Applicants must, by the closing date for applications have: 1. At least a Level 3 BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Civil Engineering or Building Studies Please provide Type of Qualification (including result/grade); Main Subjects and Date Awarded

- AND 2. A minimum of 1 year post qualification experience, in at least 3 of the following areas:
- (i) Topographical surveys, such as watercourse inspections, site investigation, and setting line and level;
- (ii) Preparation and updating of engineering drawings;
- (iii) Use of computer applications in the workplace e.g. spreadsheets/CAD;
- (iv) Supervision of engineering site works, e.g. contractors/direct labour force;
- (v) Preparation of engineering contract documents e.g. specifications/bills of quantities;
- (vi) Preparation of engineering reports and calculations e.g. site survey reports and feasibility reports.
