Job description
To support the smooth running of the preschool and afterschool services by providing a safe, stimulating, inclusive and nurturing environment for children. The childcare assistant will work as part of a team to promote children's learning, development, wellbeing and enjoyment through play and planned activities.
Responsibilities
- Help to provide and participate in all daily activities, special events and outings.
- Encourage positive participation and inclusion of all children in activities and experiences.
- Encourage children during activities and provide support to children who require it.
- Support children with homework where required.
- Assist in preparing and setting up playrooms and activity areas before sessions and tidying away afterwards.
- Participate in daily cleaning rotas and help maintain facilities, resources and equipment.
- Report any damaged or unsafe equipment requiring repair or replacement.
- Assist with preparing children for collection, transport arrangements and headcounts where required.
- Work collaboratively with professionally qualified practitioners and colleagues to create an engaging learning environment.
- Encourage parental involvement and assist with stay-and-play sessions, open days, and other family engagement activities.
- Promote the values and reputation of Loughgiel Childcare Centre at all times.
- Advise the Manager of any matters requiring attention.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families and staff, sharing information only through appropriate safeguarding procedures.
- Ensure the safety, welfare, and safeguarding of all children at all times.
- Report observations, concerns, accidents, incidents, or inappropriate behaviour promptly to the Manager.
- Assist with planning, preparing and delivery of stimulating, age-appropriate activities that support children's learning, development, and wellbeing. Contribute to plans to promote all areas of children’s development and wellbeing.
- Observe, encourage, enable and stimulate children's development through play.
- Carry out observations and contribute to assessments of individual children as directed by the Manager.
- Be aware of and follow all safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, and organisational policies and procedures in order to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
- Undertake all other duties appropriate to the role as directed by the Manager.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Experience working with children.
- Level 2 Diploma/NVQ in Playwork. (Or Level 2 Diploma/NVQ in Children’s Care, Learning & Development).
- Willingness to complete a Level 3 qualification.
- Willingness to undertake First Aid,
- Food Hygiene and Child Protection Training.
- Good communication skills. Good level of knowledge of child development.
- Understanding of the importance of play. Access NI and Trust checks.
Desirable Skills
- Level 3 Diploma/NVQ in Playwork or CCLD.
- Health & Safety training.
