Job description

The Clinical Psychologist will be responsible for providing a high quality specialist Psychology service to clients of the Adult Learning Disability service within the WHSCT. In addition to generic clinical assessment, this psychologist will play a key role in the specialist assessment of Autism and provide intervention as required. This will be across all sectors of care; further to assessment, the clinical psychologist will provide clinical formulation, therapeutic input and consultation on clients’ psychological care to colleagues and others, including family and carers. The psychologist will work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures. The psychologist will contribute to audit, research, policy and service development as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• To formulate and implement plans for formulation based psychological support, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client’s problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
• To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
• To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose needs are supported by psychologically based standard care plans.
• To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professional’s contributing directly to clients’ formulation, diagnosis and support plan.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

• Doctoral degree or equivalent accepted by the British Psychological Society as qualifying the person to work as a Registered Practitioner Psychologist; or be eligible for graduation in October 2026.
• Must be HCPC registered (in case of new graduates, registration achieved by start of post) and eligible for registration as a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society.
• Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a range of settings.
