Development and Support Deputy Youth Worker


Job description

This is an intentional developmental role designed to build the post-holder’s capacity in youth leadership, project management, and operational administration. The successful candidate will work closely under the mentorship of senior staff to shadow management duties while providing essential hands-on support to frontline youth provision.

Responsibilities

  • Ethos & Environment: Maintain the organisation's ethos by helping create a caring, safe, and supportive environment for young people.
  • Relationship Building: Develop and maintain positive relationships with young people through conversation and by encouraging active participation in planned programmes.
  • Curriculum Delivery: Work directly with young people to deliver activities aligned with the Youth Service Curriculum for NI and departmental priorities, supporting the full-time worker in assessing needs.
  • Progression & Recording: Assist the Designated Programme Leads in articulating and recording young people’s progression in sessional and project documentation.
  • Specialist Provision: Support the development and delivery of projects, fostering youth voice, and enhancing residential and outdoor learning elements of the programme.
  • Community Relations: Actively promote and participate in inter-community activities.
  • Action Planning: Assist the full-time worker in implementing the Annual Delivery Plan and targeted projects within the organisation's EA-funded Youth Work provision
  • Administrative Support: Support the full-time worker and senior staff with administration, session evaluations, and data gathering for management and funding reports.
  • Financial & Fundraising Awareness: Gain insight into budget management by assisting with basic financial tracking and participating in Londonderry YMCA fundraising initiatives.
  • Continuous Learning: Actively participate in supervision, YMCA training, and team development initiatives to enhance skills necessary for independent project management.
  • Volunteer Support: Work alongside the full-time worker to support, motivate, and guide part-time staff and volunteers.
  • Shadowing Management: Under the guidance of the Designated Programme Leads, shadow line management duties, staff inductions, and centre coordination to build leadership capacity.
  • Safeguarding: Implement the Londonderry YMCA Child Protection Policy and work with young people to safeguard their welfare and the welfare of others.
  • Representation: Represent the organisation locally at YMCA Ireland and external events alongside senior staff.
  • Maintain a flexible, creative, and innovative attitude to meet the evolving needs of the young people and the organisation.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Are working towards completion of their youth work degree and have experience working in a youth work setting in the last 2 years.
  • Have at least 2 years of experience in leading projects in the Youth and/or Community Work sector, and are working towards the Level 4 Certificate in Youth Studies.

Desirable Skills

  • Provide evidence of having delivered and developed programmes within the NI Youth Work Curriculum.
  • Be familiar with current issues facing young people and the support they require.
