Job description

The post holder is will assist in the provision of emergency and elective surgical services to the adult and paediatric population of the Western Health and Social Care Trust. This will include direct care and in addition appropriate referral to other surgical teams throughout Northern Ireland, as deemed necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting at operations.
  • Undertaking minor and intermediate operations in accordance with the doctor’s experience and capabilities, when so authorised by the Consultant. More major operations may occasionally be performed under supervision.
  • Participating in Consultant’s ward rounds.
  • Accompanying the Consultant for Day cases theatre, clinics as required and endoscopy sessions.
  • Participation in the provision of day Surgical Services Trustwide.
  • Responding to pre and post-operative issues and emergencies.
  • Participation in various investigations and treatments.
  • Establishing venous access and prescribing of appropriate medications and fluids including intravenous injections of radiological contrast media, if required.
  • Completion of request data for laboratory, radiological and other investigations/treatments.
  • The arranging of emergency admission of patients in consultation with general practitioners, and the examination and clerking of such patients in conjunction with the core trainee/SHO in surgery.
  • To participate in the provision of general out-patient clinics, as appropriate.
  • The examination of patients on arrival to the surgical clinics or emergency admissions to the surgical wards; recording findings; initiation of investigation and treatment and reporting to the Consultants, where appropriate.
  • Co-ordination of out of hours emergency admissions and also facilitating transfer to appropriate specialties.
  • Be aware of and respond to, as necessary, any major incidents.
  • Partake in Specialty Doctor on-call rota.
  • Additional duties will include training and support to Junior Doctors. The postholder, along with their Surgical colleagues, are required to provide prospective cover for annual leave, public holidays and study leave.
  • He/She is expected to undertake continuing medical education relating to the practice of General Surgery, prepare for annual appraisal and should register with the Royal College of Surgeons for CPD and revalidation.
  • The postholder shall participate in the continuing multi-professional audit and educational activities with other Hospital Departments.
  • He/She should also attend local Audit Meetings i.e. monthly GAIN.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Hold full or eligible for GMC registration and licence to practice.
  • Have at least 4 years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme or as a Fixed Term Specialty Trainee in a relevant specialty.
  • Or Have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment or have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post and meet the on-call commitments.
  • This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.

Desirable Skills

  • Hold a higher diploma e.g. MD, MSc, Dip Med Education etc.
  • Hold ALS certification.
  • Experience in elective & emergency General Surgery and Endoscopy.
