Job description

Responsible for all youth work programmes; Planning and Youth Work Delivery; Design and oversee; Safeguarding and Duty of Care; Leadership/Staff Management; Partnership and Community; Monitoring; Evaluation/Reporting; Resource and Budget. In Summary: The role acts as a bridge between local youth needs in Galliagh and the strategic requirements of the EA Youth Service, ensuring that Greater Shantallow Community Arts delivers structured, safe, and impactful youth work that meets the outcomes defined in the area specification.

Responsibilities

• The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all youth work programmes delivered through Greater Shantallow Community Arts.
• Align with the EA Youth Service Area Plan for Galliagh.
• Respond to identified local needs (e.g., deprivation, disengagement, community tensions, mental health, etc.
• Deliver targeted and universal youth work outcomes as defined by the Education, Authority (Northern Ireland).
• Programme Planning and Youth Work Delivery, Design and oversee structured youth programmes (evening, outreach, and project-based work) Ensure activities are participatory, inclusive, and youth-led.
• Support personal and social development outcomes (confidence, resilience, leadership, citizenship) Develop programmes that meet EA priorities such as good relations, health & wellbeing, and learning for life and work.
• Safeguarding and Duty of Care, Ensure full compliance with EA safeguarding policies and procedures.
• Maintain safe recruitment, supervision, and vetting of staff and volunteers.
• Act as a key safeguarding lead within delivery settings, Respond appropriately to child protection concerns and reporting procedures.
• Provide day-to-day leadership for youth work staff, volunteers, and sessional workers.
• Support supervision, appraisal, and continuous professional development.
• Ensure staff practice reflects EA Youth Service standards and quality frameworks.
• Work collaboratively with local schools, community organisations, statutory agencies, and families.
• Contribute to area-based youth service networks in Galliagh and surrounding areas.
• Strengthen community arts and youth work integration where relevant (e.g. through arts-based engagement).
• Maintain accurate records of attendance, participation, and outcomes.
• Contribute to EA reporting requirements (quantitative and qualitative evidence).
• Demonstrate impact against agreed indicators in the Galliagh Area Specification.
• Use evaluation data to improve service delivery.
• Ensure programmes are inclusive of all young people, particularly those considered harder to reach.
• Promote equality of opportunity in line with EA policies.
• Address barriers to participation (transport, confidence, disability, cultural access, etc.)
• Manage allocated resources effectively in line with EA funding conditions.
• Ensure value for money and compliance with financial procedures.
• Support funding applications or reporting where required.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

• Level 3 qualification in Youth Work, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the EA, together with 3 years paid experience working with children and young people.

Desirable Skills

• Level 4 or 5 or degree-level qualification in Youth Work or a related discipline, experience of managing or leading youth provision.
• Safeguarding/Child Protection training.
• First Aid.
• Experience of working with young people aged 9 to18.
• Experience of community-based/open-access youth work.
• Experience of supervising youth workers and volunteers.
