Workshop Technician


Job description

We are seeking individuals to join our Casual Register to provide practical maintenance and workshop support across a range of vocational areas, including Engineering, Joinery, Plumbing, Electrical, Automotive and Wet Trades. The role will involve preparing materials, tools and equipment for practical classes, maintaining organised and safe workshop environments, supporting lecturers and students during practical activities, carrying out routine equipment checks and minor repairs where appropriately trained, and assisting with stock control and the distribution of tools, materials and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). You will play an important part in ensuring our workshops operate safely and effectively, with a strong focus on Health & Safety and maintaining accurate equipment and stock records. Successful applicants will normally be based at the campus closest to their home address but may be required to work across other South West College campuses and sites, including Enniskillen, Dungannon, Omagh, Cookstown and Gortin Road. As this is a Casual Register, working opportunities will be offered in line with College requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials, tools and equipment for practical workshop sessions.
  • Organise and maintain tools, materials and workshop areas to ensure a safe, tidy and effective learning environment.
  • Support lecturers and students during practical classes and activities.
  • Carry out routine equipment checks, maintain accurate records and report any faults or concerns.
  • Undertake minor equipment repairs where appropriately trained and authorised to do so.
  • Assist with stock control, including ordering, receiving, storing and issuing tools, materials and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Support and promote safe working practices, taking a proactive approach to Health & Safety across workshop areas.
  • Assist with the supervision of students within teaching and workshop areas where required.
  • Support the management of lockers, keys and other workshop resources.
  • Drive College vehicles between campuses where required.
  • Undertake general maintenance and provide wider College support outside of term time, where required.
  • Participate in relevant training and ensure mandatory CPD remains up to date.
  • Provide additional practical and operational support as required to meet the needs of the College.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • NVQ Level 2 or other equivalent Level 2 qualification in one of the following professional and technical training areas - Automotive, Electrical, Engineering, Joinery, Plumbing or related subject area or 3 years relevant industrial experience.
  • GCSE Maths and English (A - C) or equivalent Essential Skills Qualifications, or willingness to undertake these qualifications during the first 6 months of employment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings if required.
  • First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake if appointed to the role.

Desirable Skills

  • A relevant Health & Safety qualification

Further Information

This is a casual register and the post holder/s will be based at a campus closest to their home address but may be required to travel to other SWC Campuses; Enniskillen - Killyhevlin, Dungannon - Main Campus, Omagh - Main Campus, Cookstown - Kilcronnagh or Omagh - Gortin Road sites.
