Job description

We are seeking a Befriender to support a young male adult with Down Syndrome to enjoy a full, active and meaningful life. The role will focus on providing opportunities for social interaction, community involvement, learning and enjoyable activities, both within the local community and at home. The successful candidate will help to promote independence and social engagement. Role Requirements: The successful candidate must have access to their own vehicle and hold appropriate business-use car insurance, as travel within the community will form part of the role. Appointment will be subject to the successful completion of an AccessNI check.

Responsibilities

• Provide friendly, person-centred support based on the individual's interests, preferences and needs
• Support the young adult to access and participate in social and recreational activities within the community
• Plan and participate in engaging activities such as attending the local library, walking, cinema visits, bowling, cafés, arts and crafts, music, sports and other activities of interest
• Provide stimulating and enjoyable activities at home, including lego, arts and crafts, cooking, games and other interests
• Support the development of practical and life skills through everyday activities
• Provide companionship and positive social interaction
• Introduce new activities and experiences in a positive and encouraging way
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality
• Maintaining the safety of the individual and reporting any health changes or concerns to the Employer

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

• A strong interest in supporting people with additional needs
• A good communicator who can build a positive and trusting relationship
• Ability to work independently

Desirable Skills

• Previous experience of working with people with Down Syndrome or other Disabilities

Further Information

Working Hours: The role will involve working one day each weekend, either Saturday or Sunday. The standard hours will be either 12:00pm - 6:00pm or 1:00pm - 7:00pm. There is some flexibility regarding the specific day and hours worked, which can be discussed and agreed.
