Job description

To provide a high standard of cleanliness, hygiene and general upkeep across YMCA premises, helping to ensure buildings are safe, welcoming and well maintained. The role combines regular cleaning duties with caretaker and building maintenance work. The period of employment is conditional on funding from the Education Authority which has been awarded until March 2029.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out cleaning duties in line with an agreed cleaning schedule.
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in kitchens, toilets, communal areas and other designated spaces.
  • Clean floors, surfaces, fixtures and fittings and deal with spillages or other cleaning issues as they arise.
  • Ensure soap, toilet paper, hand towels and other essential supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Monitor cleaning stock levels and advise the Business Support Officer when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Ensure cleaning materials and equipment are stored and used safely - reporting of any new cleaning materials to ensure COSHH datasheet is kept up to date.
  • Manage general waste and recycling within the building.
  • Ensure bins are prepared and placed out for collection as required.
  • Assist with taking recycling to the local Recycling Centre
  • Undertake basic maintenance and repair tasks allocated by the Business Support Officer through the YMCA's maintenance reporting system.
  • Carry out practical tasks such as minor repairs, painting and touch-ups, assembling or moving furniture, replacing fittings and carrying out basic building checks.
  • Report any faults or maintenance issues requiring further attention.
  • Carry out maintenance tasks at other YMCA-owned or operated properties where required.
  • Identify and report maintenance faults, hazards or safety concerns.
  • Assist with routine building safety checks, including weekly fire alarm tests.
  • Follow YMCA health and safety procedures, including COSHH and safe manual handling.
  • Use cleaning equipment, tools and other equipment safely.
  • Maintain the security of premises within the responsibilities of the role.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, building users and members of the public.
  • Assist with room set-up and hospitality for external user groups where required.
  • Open, lock and secure the building when requested.
  • Provide practical support to help ensure YMCA premises operate effectively.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Knowledge of effective cleaning methods and safe working practices.
  • Experience of cleaning in a workplace, community, volunteering, home or other relevant setting.
  • Some practical experience of basic DIY, repair or maintenance tasks.
  • Awareness of health and safety, including COSHH and manual handling.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks in line with agreed priorities.
  • Ability to maintain good standards of cleanliness and presentation.
  • Ability to carry out basic practical and maintenance tasks safely.
  • Ability to identify and report maintenance or health and safety concerns.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and equipment appropriately.
  • Ability to work positively with staff, building users and members of the public.
  • Ability to work in agreement with the aims and objectives of the YMCA

Desirable Skills

  • Previous experience in a cleaning, caretaker, handyperson or maintenance role.
  • Experience of working in a community, voluntary or charitable setting.
  • A full clean driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Further Information

WORKING HOURS The post is normally worked as 20 hours per week undertaking cleaning, caretaker and associated building maintenance duties. By mutual agreement, these hours may be worked flexibly and grouped into longer periods or shifts, according to operational requirements. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT: 30 days, plus 12 stat days pro rata.
