Job description

To ensure the safe, efficient, and effective maintenance of the library and museum buildings, grounds, equipment, and facilities. The postholder will support the preservation of collections by maintaining appropriate environmental conditions, carrying out routine repairs, overseeing contractors, and ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

• Undertake minor repairs and maintenance including painting, decorating, basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical tasks where appropriate.
• Carry out routine inspections of buildings and facilities.
• Report significant defects and arrange repairs when required.
• Assist with fire safety procedures, emergency planning, and evacuation drills.
• Monitor service contracts and scheduled maintenance.
• Maintain maintenance logs, inspection records, and compliance documentation.
• Assist with room set-up and equipment installation.
• Provide support for exhibitions and events as required.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

• Practical skills and experience of building maintenance, facilities management, or a related trade.
• GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
• Communication and record-keeping skills.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
• Ability to work independently and prioritise workloads.

Desirable Skills

• Experience working in a museum, library, archive, heritage, or public building.
• Training in fire safety, first aid, or manual handling.
